Not unlike many post-war communities throughout southern California, South Gate must balance an aging tree population, the need for safe and effective infrastructure, and capital improvement projects with the desire to maintain an inviting, tree-rich environment. South Gate retained Carlberg Associates to identify problem trees, recommend the removal of trees that had reached their useful lifespan, and suggest new tree species that would be more suitable for their streetscapes. We also advise the public works department as they study alternatives to sidewalk, curb and gutter repair adjacent to city trees. Carlberg Associates has evaluated the relative risk associated with over 2000 trees throughout the community. We have also been instrumental in South Gate’s re-forestation program, selecting over one thousand nursery specimens for planting in parkways within the city.
