CALTECH – TREE RISK ASSESSMENTS

Perhaps the oldest living entity on the campus is the centuries-old Engelmann oak located in the center of the campus. Surrounded by administrative and academic buildings this oak, which some believe exceeds 400 years, is finally succumbing to old age and is slowly disintegrating. Campus facilities staff has recognized the great significance of this tree and has taken extraordinary measures to let it die with dignity. First, the canopy was surrounded by a fence to protect passersby. Limbs are bound together with an intricate system of steel cables. Seed capsules have been harvested and young trees are awaiting their chance to be planted, carrying forward the provenance of this great and ancient oak tree.
