CITY OF SIERRA MADRE – COMMUNITY FOREST MANAGEMENT PLAN

Selected by the City of Sierra Madre, Carlberg Associates collaborated with City staff, community members, stakeholders, and decision makers in the development of the City of Sierra Madre Community Forest Management Plan (CFMP). Carlberg staff researched historic documents, reviewed City policies, ordinances, and maintenance guidelines, and canvassed the City to assess the parks and parkway tree populations, vacancies, and challenges.  Carlberg drafted sections of the CFMP to address the long term care and management of the City’s community forest.  Key components of the CFMP include guidelines for maintenance and improvement of the community forest, provision of criteria to allow for the selective removal of undesirable, potentially hazardous, or aging trees, and recommendations for future tree selections.  Succession planting focuses on site appropriateness, adaptability to the local climate, environmental benefits, and enhancement of each neighborhoods’ character and aesthetics.  Best Management Practices and technical guidelines for tree care were drafted in collaboration with the City’s Public Works Division.  Carlberg presented the CFMP at numerous community and stakeholder meetings prior to its adoption in 2014.
