This historic allée comprised American elms for some 70 years until decay, senescence, and structural weakness necessitated their removal. We researched Dutch Elm Disease-tolerant American elm cultivars and chose ‘Valley Forge’ as the replacement tree. A local nursery grew the trees for us until they were large enough to provide a presence on Elm Tree Lawn. This iconic space hosts commencement every spring, as well as other events throughout the year.
